ORAL CANCER AND THE ORALID(tm) SCREENING DEVICE

Good news ! Recent research has shown that the number of most cancers is declining more than ever!  The bad news is that oral cancer is still on the rise. This type of cancer will cost the life of one North-American every hour. This growing problem is due to the human papillomavirus (HPV). People who have not been vaccinated against this virus are more likely to develop oropharyngeal cancer. Did you know that when you go see your dentist, he or she will not only check your gums and teeth, but also other oral tissues, such as your tongue and oropharynx? Dentists have also been trained to screen for abnormal tissue in your mouth, like oral cancer.

Thankfully, there are tools that can help your dentist screen for oropharyngeal cancer, like OralID(tm). This gadget emits a blue fluorescent light that is reflected back when shone on healthy cells. A loss of autofluorescence indicates a dark mass (abnormal tissue) or a cancerous lesion.

Our dental clinic doesn’t just focus on your smile, we care about your overall well-being!
